GENERAL INFORMATION
DESCRIPTION OF TOWN
SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION
Yildiz Technical University (YTU) was
founded in 1911, Konduktor Mekteb-i Alisi as a
technician school, in order to meet the
“science officer” requirement of the Ministry
of Public Works. When the school renamed as
Yildiz Teknik Okulu, engineering
programs were
initiated and placed in the facilities
to the north side of Yildiz Palace
in 1937. After serving as İstanbul State
Engineering and Architectural Academy during 1969-1982, the school became
Yildiz University in 1982 and then Yildiz Technical
University in
1992.
The university is located
in İstanbul city center. İstanbul is
one of the world's great cities famous for
its historical treasures and
magnificent scenic beauties.
İstanbul spreads over two continents (Asia and Europe) that this feature makes
İstanbul the unique city
in the world.
YTU has three campuses,
central campus in Yildiz (Besiktas), Davutpasa Campus (Esenler) and Ayazaga
Campus (Maslak).

HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE
NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS)
Air: İstanbul has two airports, Ataturk Airport
(Code: IST) in the european side where you can find subway (until midnight) and
bus
(HAVAS shuttles), and Sabiha Gökcen Airport (Code: SAW) where you can
find cheaper public bus connections and also HAVAS
shuttles to the Centrum.
The shuttle service called HAVAS running between the airport and Taksim

Rail: The train station for arrivals from Europe is Sirkeci
station (Eminönü) which is at the centre of the city.
Bus: from

TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE
MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) 
You can reach Yıldız-Beşiktaş using a
variety of transportation means through subway and
metrobus (via Zincirlikuyu), tram and funicular (Via Kabatas),
bus, boats, seabus and taxi.

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING
INSTITUTION
The LLP Erasmus activities are organized by the YTU
European Office (AB Ofisi) established in 2004. The coordination of the EU
Office is executed by three part time university professors, one Turkish
lecturer, two staffs and one office secretary. Each department 
of the academic units has its own Erasmus Coordinator.
YTU has in total of 26 500 students (857 PhD
programme, 2 410 Master programme students and others are undergraduates), and
the numbers of staffs are 571 professors, 174 lecturers, 95 language
teachers, 43 specialists.
There are 844 outgoing Erasmus students
and 250 bilateral agreements at YTU.
ACCOMMODATION
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED
There are two options for accommodation:
Yildiz
Technical University Dormitory. Located in Maslak, 20 min. to Yildiz by bus.
Tourism Vocational High-School Practice Hotel. Located in Levent, 10 min. to
Yildiz by bus.
MEALS
The Head Office of Health, Culture and Sport
Department meets the social needs of students such as health, culture, sports,
nutrition,
accommodation and social services.
Lunch is
served regularly in the student restaurant
between 12.00 and 14.00 except weekends, and
its cost is 2 Euros. In Yildiz
Campus cafeterias are
available with a variety of meals, e.g. a lunch costs from 2 to 4 Euros.
Other services are library, computer labs, conference activities and student
clubs.
RECEPTION OF STUDENTS
MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST
MEETING)
A time schedule for picking up from the airport
will be arranged and announced. At the picking up time, we would be pleased to
take
EILC students by the University shuttle services from the airport to
the main campus, Yildiz, Besiktas.

MEETING COCTAIL
At the
first course day the EILC students are wellcome to participate our EILC
Meeting Coctail that will be held
on 10.08.2009 at 14:00.
On the
last course day a ceremony of certificates will be held to the EILC
participants on 04.09.2009 at 14:00.
Both
organizations will take place at the Oditorium Exhibition Hall, Yildiz campus.

SPORTS FACILITIES
The students are able to use the fields of
basketball and football at the main campus. Yildiz Palace Park just behind
university is a nice area for jogging and walking. Other sport facilities in
Davutpasa and Maslak campuses are also available.
ENTERTAINMENT
During the EILC education, students will be able to
watch Turkish films and documentaries once a week.
For cultural
activities, University and Student Club organizations at YTU, Cultural
Centers-Municipal and Private Establishments in
Besiktas, Ortakoy, Taksim
etc. are also available.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
LEVEL: I - Beginner course
PERIOD:

LANGUAGE COMPONENT
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES
AND TEACHING METHODS
The EILC are designed for incoming students from
other countries to Turkey, in order to study at Turkish Universities by the LLP
exchange programme. The objectives of the course are to teach
Turkish Language at the beginner level and to help the students to
discover
and adopt the Turkish Culture.
During the courses, the
daily life dialogues such as greeting, shopping and so
on would be given by the use of three fundamental
tenses
in order to reach the student skills from A1 level to B2 level (defined under
European Language Portfolio Levels)
Lessons will be held in
classes of 15 students in “U-Type” seating plan. The teachers will speak
only in Turkish. The methodology
of the courses is
eclectic. Questioning&Answering, playing roles and
dramatization will also be used according to
the course’s
topics. Teaching materials are based on Turkish texts,
movies, novels, etc.
TOTAL NUMBER OF CLASSES: 4 classes, 15
students per each class.
HOURS IN CLASSROOM 3 hours per day.
HOURS OF PRACTICE CONVERSATION/LANGUAGE
LABORATORY 1 hour per day.
ASSESSMENT
Written and oral examinations, quizzes, essays,
dialogue writings.

COMPONENT
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CULTURAL ELEMENTS INCLUDED
IN THE COURSE: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS
Introduction
to Turkish culture is aimed, apart from the language
education, cultural activities will be organized in parallel
to the
course program. Various social events such as visits to
historical and cultural places, film screenings on Turkish culture,
seminars
introducing Turkish music and guided tours
to the historical areas in İstanbul, will be
arranged to give the Turkish life style and
views to the students.
